1874 - Bridging the Brisbane River

In 1865, a provisional timber bridge linking Brisbane and South Brisbane was constructed where the modern Victoria Bridge now exists. Following extensive damage from marine woodworms, however, the bridge collapsed in 1867.

The government agreed to replace the bridge established as Queensland’s first permanent bridge in 1874. Designed by Robinson and L’Anson, the bridge was constructed from wrought-iron lattice girders on cast-iron cylinders. Despite its structure, the bridge was not strong enough to withstand the pressures of further floods in 1893.

A third bridge, constructed in 1897, proved to be more resilient than its predecessors. It was opened by Lord Lamington and remained in operation until 1969 when the present-day Victoria Bridge was opened to facilitate automotive traffic.
