QANTAS, Australia’s first airline, was founded in Winton, on 16 November 1920 by four World War I veterans, Paul McGuiness, Hudson Fysh, Fergus McMaster and Arthur Baird. The name QANTAS was chosen as an acronym for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited.
Many of the first QANTAS shareholders were residents of remote western Queensland who believed that the airline could play a vital role in connecting their region to the rest of Australia. The QANTAS board that was established during the airline’s early years also featured strong representation from the central-western region of Queensland.
The first QANTAS aircraft, an Avro 504K, could only carry one pilot and two passengers with a cruising speed of 105 kilometres per hour. Today, QANTAS is the oldest operating airline in the English-speaking world, flying to 81 destinations across five continents.
