1922 - A one-chamber parliament

Queensland remains the only unicameral State in Australia following the abolition of the Legislative Council in 1922.

The Adult Franchise Act of 1905 first abolished plural voting for property holders in the Legislative Assembly. The Legislative Council remained the chamber of privilege with appointed conservative members until the intervention of Labor Premier, Barrister T.J. Ryan.

During November 1915, Ryan led a debate to abolish the Legislative Council, arguing that the Order-in-Council of 6 June 1859 gave the lower house total power. The case was presented to a referendum in 1917, a claim which was tested by the Queensland Supreme Court and the High Court.

It was not until 1922 that the Legislative Assembly was abolished with the help of 13 of its Labor members known as the 'suicide squad'.
