The jubilee of Queensland’s separation in 1909 paled in comparison to the enthusiasm expressed for Queen Victoria’s jubilee in 1888. Queensland celebrated the first Centenary of Separation celebrations in December 1959.
By 1959, interest in the State’s achievements had increased considerably with government, business and community organisations joining together for celebrations across Queensland. In Brisbane, additional festivities revolved around the first Centenary of municipal government.
Highlights of the celebrations included the presentation of Miss Queensland to the Deputy Premier and re-enactments of Governor Bowen’s arrival at the Botanical Gardens. State industry was represented by a grand parade featuring a dubious tribute to the tobacco industry.
