1988 - Queensland Expo-sed

On 30 April 1988, Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the World Expo '88 as a central feature of the national Bicentennial celebrations.

Situated on the previously derelict south bank of the Brisbane River, the site included 80 pavilions with 36 international exhibitions. The State Government provided $300 million in funding with Liberal Treasurer, Sir Llew Edwards as Chairman of the Organising Committee.

Landscape architect, Laurie Smith, was employed to ensure that Queensland’s first world exposition was the “greenest Expo ever”. As part of the celebrations, Brisbane River was revitalised, creating a stage alongside to host exciting world-class events. Pavement dining and drinking changed the eating habits of Queensland forever.

Expo '88 closed to a rapturous reception with a performance by the Seekers of the hit song, 'The Carnival is Over', sealing Queensland’s place on the international tourism map.
