1860 - Sir Robert Herbert appointed Premier

Robert George Wyndham Herbert rose from his position as Colonial Secretary to assume the role and responsibilities as Queensland’s first Premier on 22 May 1860.

His interests as Premier covered a wide range of matters important to the development of Queensland, including an extension of the railway system, the development of communications (namely the telegraph) and the advancement of port facilities.

Premier Herbert was also a strong supporter of increased immigration and efforts to diversify the economy as a method to establish a firm basis for stable government. He was also active in implementing religious and educational reform, introducing a national system of education.

Following his term as Premier, Herbert returned to England to join the Colonial Office where he advocated cooperation between Britain and the colonies.
