1863 - Go-ahead for Grammar

Ipswich Grammar School was established as Queensland’s first grammar school following the Grammar Schools Act 1860. The Act allowed for the founding of a grammar school in any town where £1000 could be raised locally. The legislation specified that once funding had been raised, the government would contribute an additional £2000.

On 23 September 1863, Governor Bowen officially opened the Ipswich Grammar School for Boys. The school has since educated many well-known Australians, including the writers John Birmingham and Vance Palmer, film directors Charles Chauvel and George Miller, and the current Chancellor of the University of Queensland, Sir Llewellyn Edwards.
