Things that Happened for the First Time in Queensland in the 1900s

Women Voted for The First Time!
Before 1905, women didn’t have the right to vote which may sound bizarre in 2021 but it wasn’t back in the early 1900s. Although the first elections were held in 1860, it wasn’t until 1905 that women were granted the right to vote. It was on 18 May 1907 that in the Queensland state elections women voted for the first time.
First University is Established
By the state government, the first university was officially founded in 1910 in Brisbane. It was the University of Queensland and teaching was started in 1911 in the Old Government House on George Street in Brisbane!
Alternative Polio Treatments
In 1911, the first alternative treatments for Polio were pioneered in the state and these tremeents are still in use today.
Qantas is Established
It was in 1917 that the first airline of Australia Qnatas is established. This airlines was run by four world war I veterans in Winton. Qantas is among the leading airline companies in Australia today.
Removes the Upper House
Queensland was the first and remains the only state of Australia to abolish the Upper House and have only one house. It was done in 1922.
First Koala Sanctuary is Made
At Fig Tree Pocket, Queensland the first koala sanctuary was established in the year 1927 and here the first koalas ate bred in captivity. This sanctuary was the first koala sanctuary of the word as well.
First Woman Elected in Parliament
After women were granted the right to vote in 1905, it was in 1929 that the first woman is elected to the Queensland Parliament. She belonged to the Country National Party and won the Brisbane seat for Bulimba
First Women Police Officers
In the year 1931, two women named Ellen O’Donnell and Zara Dare were accepted in the Queensland Police department for the first time. Thus, they were the first female police officers who started their duties at the Roma Street police station.
American Troops are Deployed
For the first time, American troops are deployed in Brisbane and are welcomed by people enthusiastically. They were first deployed in March of 1941 and then again in December of the same year.
